The Problem of Travelling-In-Space
Interstellar Travel, under constant acceleration at approximately 80% the speed of light constitutes a unique problematic in the phenomenology of Becoming aboard the spacecraft. It rips open our regular perceptions, and our body. The experience onboard a interstellar ship would require an emergent paradox whose resolution would be standard flight-procedure; instead of landing while wearing a seatbelt, the process would be a recombination, solidification and resurrection of the liquified occupants upon arrival. Intelligent, interstellar civilizations, therefore must overcome the problematics of being-in-space, or the state of becoming for the occupants aboard, while in space at relativistic speeds. Our problematic shall therefore be explored in the following, along with the implications of Compression, Lateralization and Gothic-spacecraft.
Firstly, the direct problematic of being-in-space must be defined according to what it is, how it effects travel and why it even is a problem. However, this may not be as direct of an exploration as it may at first seem, as we are taking into account here Phenomenological-Becoming, that is-the Potential of the States of Things aboard the Ship that ultimately, do not exist according to the Real on Earth. Our entry point into the problematic of Travelling-in-space is therefore the simple admission that an interstellar ship is in Space, and not on Earth, for it is Travelling-In-Space at a speed that brings with it a relativity, that is in the realm of the Unreal on Earth. The Unreal on Earth is something of an empty expression, as Earthboundness is the Universal of that which is on Earth, and to apply that to Outer Space is in direct opposition-it breaks up our conception of Unity in Earthly Things. We must, as a necessity of exploring, venture into the Real of being-aboard-the-spacecraft, while at the same time becoming alien to Earth. This we provisionally conceptualize to be the basic state of relativity, and which shall lead us possessed in its grasp, into the concrete problematic of Travelling-in-Space.
We are confronted with Space before us in preliminary immediacy. What is apparent as a first impression, is the preposition of the “in” of Being-in-Space. The state of being-in must be articulated, for it points to the most direct, raw and simple manifestation of the problematic of Travelling-in-space. Through the perception of the “in”, we are immediately assailed into Certainty. That which is Certain in Perception-the Space that which we have experienced through Lived Experience is that which is a One in its properties. The Thing that is Space, is dark, cold, mysterious, vast-for it is a One in Certainty. The darkness of Space is Also “in”. The preposition comes up here again. In our Certainty of what Space is, we affirm that its Unity, that is, its Oneness-with its properties is what Space is. The expression of Space being Cold, implies most Certainly that the coldness is possessed by space in its Oneness. We have inadvertently come across a revelation as well, as in the Certain inquiry about Space, we have used the word “Also”. The Also is what allows the Space to be Space-to be substantial in reference to what it is; in its properties, its location and where it is going. The property of Space is simple to examine, since the immediacy of Certainty allows us to deduce through reckoning what Space really is and it is done through Lived Experience. Lived Experience is what we have come to know in general Space and in Time-we know that Space is dark, as we have experienced the dark before in Time. However, the Essence of the darkness, although it lies in Certainty in Space, it is both in and with; Lived Experience allows for the experience of Difference in regard to the transformation of Essence of Thingness in its two modes of manifestation: being-for-another and being-for-itself. We can infer the preliminary assertion that the preposition of “in” is allowed to be the preposition of “with”, in so far as Lived Experience allows to be through the “Also”
The basic operation of being-in is thus the direct manner of how being-in itself was explained. It is the process of Becoming with Certainty, of the immediacy of perception and the unfolding of emergence. Being-in, from its Earthly conceptualization has come to be the Being-in-Space, precisely form the “In”. The “in” has lead into the direction of realizing that the emergence of Becoming-in-space is only filled with the Essence of Becoming, as a Unity, and therefore, has taken off like a spaceship at relativistic speed. Now we reach an important milestone along the journey, that being the exploration of Distance. It becomes a necessity to not only define, but to dwell on the concept of Distance to ultimately formulate the full experience of Being-in-Space. We are in need of a navigation system-a tool that along with stating position in Space, calculates and tells us the ships braking curve, acceleration and arrival in Time. Such a system must utilize the full concept of Distance in order to actually tell us where is the ship. If we seek to know: Where is the Ship?, then Distance is the critical element of analysis. Distance, is directly related to the Being-in. If, as we have previously established, the In can be the Also, then we are being led to the conceptualization of Distance. The In is preposition of With, in the condition that the One is the perceived immediate Universal expressed in language, while inside the situation that what is perceived is on a plane, that is the Plane of Certain Immediacy with an easy access to the repository of the Universal. This plane is the There of the condition of Being-Certain. The There is nothing but the topological plane in which we or more basically, the I can be Certain and comfortable in the manifestation of phenomena, with the essence of such experience being the prediction of Things that are innately meant to happen, in the sense of being-for-us. Such a being is the being-for-us on the plane of the Certain-There. Now, the utterance of There as word is already hinting at the exposition of a reference to Space, and since the There is once again made chained to Space either by the simple interplay of In and With or by a more meta-process, we can see the signaling of the unfolding of Distance as well. In the process of the becoming of Certainty, that is in the “right after” of Perception, where we can arrive at the sense of what an Essence for a given Thing is, the Universal, by virtue of the Lived Experience providing Certainty, projects the relation of Distance. Space is thus the projection of Being-Certain as the relation of Distance between Things, for whom the Essence is perceived as the distinctness of a given Thing being close or far. In so far as Being is Becoming and vice-versa; Becoming is Being, then the phenomena of Distance is made a clear as the reflected property of the Unity of Things-in-vicinity or the Things that are close to the I. The Thing that is near, is made essential in respect of it being consumed by the Lived Experience of the I, hence determining what it is. The assertion of this, in completeness, is that the Perceiving, via the observation of the Plane of Certainty takes Distance for itself, making that which is Certain, near to itself. Nearness, is thus the expression for the position of a Thing’s Essence in Space; either it is directly for-itself, that it is far, shrouded in darkness or it is for-another, that being for us or another Thing, making it appear clear and bright, thereby allowing for the clear and efficient communication of it between us through the linguistic Universal.
Now our problematic of traveling-in-space is becoming clearer. If we are to take the account of physics and therefore conclude that for a ship travelling at 80% the speed of light, it experiences effects akin to (1) The appearance that the space inside the ship is compressing, and that distances between objects are becoming progressively smaller, as acceleration proceeds with time (2) The experience of artificial gravity due to acceleration (3) The unique necessity of decelerating before arrival requires the reversal of the ships physical and functional layout, by virtue of a gravitational pull that reverses, and gradually weakens. The third point is particularly an important one, as we have stressed the ontological nature of Distance as a part of Being; that it is neither only and fully in Space, in the materialist sense, nor a pure manifestation of reasonable construction on the part of the I or the subject. Our assertion of Distance and Space therefore brings us to the phenomena of a change in the Being-in-the ship, both in the physical and phenomenological. The full problematic is therefore, that due to the Certainty in the There, within the plane of the Certain-There, there exists the possibility of a intrusion of the Uncertain-There-of immanent darkness. Such an Uncertain-There is the consequence of a ship decelerating, and reaching its destination. This is the problem that will have to be overcome through engineering-one that is ontological, but operates in the necessity of what Being allows it to be. The problematic of Being-in-space operates in the most basic mechanism of Being’s univocality; it is most critically, in-Being, meaning that the voice of Being-its existence as immediacy, in its forms that are Space, Time and Essence are affirmed in phenomenological voice-the All which is the actual and potential, and which expresses itself as Distance.
The engineering of Uncertainty
Engineering spacecraft that can not only be propelled to relativistic speed, but actually survive decelerating is a major challenge. Firstly, the design must account for the phenomenological experience of the occupants-they must retain their human bodies, as the delivery of subjects that no longer resemble themselves is a major economic waste. Why employ a post-human subject that sees themselves as as a fractured unity, that in addition to being even potentially genetically altered after the journey, employs a repetitive, baroque style of expression and Lived Experience? If subjects reaching their destinations cannot retain themselves, then the design must accommodate for the rehabilitation and in some sense, resurrection of subjects who have died upon the shift in direction after the ship had turned around. It becomes the basic reality and nature of spaceflight that upon arrival, you die. But we need to optimistic and affirm that engineering can bypass mortality, for the subjects may not be dead in the biological sense, but their Lived Experience, in addition to encounters with time dilation, is post-human; they are the now Other to whatever interstellar colony would exist in the Future. They are whatever the ideology of the time would signify them to be, either savage barbarians, cyborg-automata lacking emotion or simply the “mentally disturbed”. They have been taken hostage by the stars and the basic task becomes to, in some way, “rehabilitate” them. Such rehabilitation would have to begin right from the moment when the ship turns around in the unified, Univocal sense of Being. However, to do such an operation while the ship is still in space is very challenging, as the change in direction not only would affect the humans, making any human directed operation unreliable, but any AI-navigation or ship-operating system would succumb to Lateralization, or the same process of achieving Uncertainty, simply without the I. This works as a mechanism of the following: upon the direct moment of intrusion of the Uncertain-There, via the accessing of a unique spatial plane, teleological core-programming would be stretched out across the two planes, resulting in the appearance of lateral data corruption as programming would divide. Therefore, even with the addition of prepared mechanisms for such a scenario, it would still become corrupted and lateral. The system would die as well, and even with the preparation for death, death still reigns supreme. Death is far more radical than it could ever be predicted.
The central computing system would have to account for the eventual reversal, avoiding teleology-programming, while embracing a new techno-thanatolatry. One which is the most attuned to the phenomenological Becoming. How such a system would function is yet to be outlined, however what is clear is that the interstellar passengers of the future will have to find a way to avoid such a problem. Nobody would enjoy being a genetically lateralized post-human aboard a gothic, dark and corrupted ship whose lighting system failed twenty cycles ago. The prospect might even be darker, as in addition to that, the procedural addition of Distance would have manifested in the linguistic forms in use of such subjects; baroque sentences expressing all forms of modality, going beyond verb, object and the usual. Instead, morphologies expressing its moral rightness or wrongness, what an object can be used for and excessive linguistic expressions dominate. If anything, the subjects coming back from an Interstellar journey would surely make for great linguists.
